Why Your Dishwasher Isn’t Getting Dishes Clean

Dishwasher, stove and refrigerator

You load the dishwasher, hit start, and come back an hour later—only to find crusty food stuck to plates or a weird film on your glasses. Frustrating, right?

If your dishwasher isn’t doing its job, it doesn’t always mean it’s broken. Sometimes, it just needs a little maintenance or a change in how it’s being used.

Let’s look at some common reasons your dishwasher might be underperforming—and what you can do to fix it.

1. You’re Overloading It

This is the #1 issue we see. If dishes are crammed too close together, the water and detergent can’t reach everything evenly.

What to do:

  • Make sure nothing is blocking the spray arms.
  • Avoid overlapping bowls and plates.
  • Don’t “nest” spoons or stack things too tightly in the silverware basket.

2. The Spray Arms Are Clogged

Food particles, hard water, or mineral deposits can clog the tiny holes in your spray arms, reducing water pressure and coverage.

What to do:

  • Remove the spray arms and rinse them out under warm water.
  • Use a toothpick or small brush to clean any clogged holes.

3. You’re Not Using the Right Detergent

Not all detergents are created equal. Using cheap pods or too little detergent can lead to cloudy glasses or food residue.

What to do:

  • Use a high-quality dishwasher detergent designed for your water type (hard vs. soft).
  • Avoid regular dish soap—this will just create suds and a mess.
  • If you’re using pods, ensure they’re stored in a dry location.

4. The Water Temperature Is Too Low

Dishwashers work best when the water is at least 120°F. If your water heater is set too low, it may not reach a sufficiently high temperature to break down grease and grime.

What to do:

  • Run the hot water in your sink for a few seconds before starting the dishwasher.
  • Check your water heater’s settings if dishes still come out dirty.

5. The Filter Needs Cleaning

Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter near the bottom to trap food particles. If that filter is clogged, water won’t circulate properly, and your dishes will suffer.

What to do:

  • Take out the bottom rack and locate the filter (usually a twist-lock design).
  • Rinse it under hot water and scrub it gently with a brush.
  • Do this once a month for best results.

6. Your Dishwasher Just Might Be Too Old

If you’ve tried everything and your dishwasher is still underperforming, it might just be nearing the end of its life. Most dishwashers last around 10 years, and newer models are way more efficient and powerful.
