Refrigerators, like all appliances, have a lifespan. According to Consumer Reports, manufacturers say that refrigerators are built to last about ten years.

There are several factors to consider:
One thing that can affect the math is that, given technological advances, even less expensive refrigerators will likely be more energy efficient than those built a decade ago.
When a refrigerator’s motor runs, it is going to make noise. However, changes in the level or type of noise can signal problems.
If the whir of the engine suddenly becomes a rattle or the volume increases, it could be a sign of a severe problem.
If it is suddenly much more silent than usual, that could be a problem, too. Make sure that the motor is still keeping the food cold enough.
Persistent condensation is usually a sign that something is wrong with your refrigerator. The question is, how expensive is the fix?
If the condensation is only on the outside, check the rubber seal on the door. If that is damaged, it actually might be a best-case scenario. That is a quick and relatively inexpensive fix. The alternative explanations are less so.
Similarly, there are innocent explanations that can explain frost in your freezer. If you defrost it, it starts growing back immediately. However, it is a sign of issues. You shouldn’t need a chisel to get things out of your freezer.
All refrigerators will give off some heat as the motor keeps the food cold. However, if it is hot to the touch, that is a sign that something is wrong.
