So that time has come. Your stove is on its last legs or has gone out and it is time to find a replacement. The first question that you must consider: are you going to look at gas stoves or electric ones?
Each has advantages and disadvantages, with one key factor perhaps looming the largest of all.

With electric stoves, there is pretty much one way to cook. You put the food in the pot or pan and then, well, cook it.
Gas stoves open up a second option for some dishes: Cooking directly over the flame becomes an option.
Obviously, this won’t work for everything (soup is obviously a no go), but certain foods can be given a smoky flavor by cooking directly on the grate.
One note: You are dealing with flames. Make sure the vents are on and a fire extinguisher is nearby, especially if you haven’t tried it before.
While gas stoves will often (although not always) cost more than their electric counterparts, the cost of the gas used tends to be less than the electricity to power an electric stove.
They also tend to last longer than electric stoves, saving money over time.
Once the fire is going, the heat is on. Unlike with electric, you don’t have to wait for the stovetop to gradually heat up or account for that time while cooking. This is one reason why some chefs prefer gas stovetops.
Anytime you are dealing with gas, there is at least some danger as far as a gas leak. You are also dealing with at least somewhat open flames, which could cause issues if you are careless.
Beyond the obvious, however, fumes from gas stoves, if not properly ventilated, can contribute to respiratory issues including childhood asthma from carbon monoxide and other particulate matter.
Most electric stovetops are flat, making them easier to clean. Spray some cleaner, wipe across, repeat as needed.
With gas stoves, there is a good chance that food and grime will get through the grates. Cleaning the grates and around the burners is far more labor intensive and time consuming.
Unless you have a good reason to switch (or are building a new kitchen), the biggest factor is likely what you have now.
If you currently have electric, a gas line would have to be installed to make the switch to a gas stove, adding a fair amount to the expense.
Similarly, the current gas line would have to be dealt with if you are switching from gas to electric.
Unless you really dislike your current type, or you are concerned with some of the safety issues with a gas stove, inertia might be the way to go. Stick with what you’ve got.
